A little bit about Lawrence

A lifelong motorcyclist, Lawrence Hacking has devoted his life to riding, racing and promoting the sport of motorcycling. Since beginning to race in 1971 he has ridden and raced in many different countries including Australia, Japan, Egypt, India, Mongolia, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, most European countries and all over North America. Hacking has competed in many different facets of racing both on 2 and 4 wheels. Generally considered an off-road racer he has represented Canada at the International Six Days Enduro a total of 6 times over three decades finishing each time. Other major events he has competed in include the Swedish classic – The Gotland Grand National, the Baja 1000 and Baja 500, the Mexican 1000, Rally Mongolia on 3 different occasions, Japan’s Tour de Blue Island and numerous international motocross races in France, Germany, Switzerland and Holland. His competition career highlights include the Targa Newfoundland car rally and the pinnacle of his career would be the completion of the 2001 Paris Dakar Rally where he became the first Canadian to complete the rugged 21-day event across Africa. In 2005 his book ‘To Dakar and Back’ was published, the book documents his journey to the finish line of what is considered the World’s toughest motor sports event.


Aside from competition, Hacking has done his part to organize major events including the Parry Sound Sport Bike Rally and the World Enduro Championships in both 2005 and 2006. Most recently he has undertaken 2 new stand alone events called the Overland Adventure Rally and the Grand Prix de Mud. In its fifth year the Overland Adventure Rally has grown exponentially and is shaping up to be a success once again.


Always making a sincere effort to promote the sport of motorcycling in a positive light, as a journalist he has written countless stories about adventure travel and racing for many different publications.
